Publications » Vol. 14: Committees for Repeal of the Test and Corporation Acts: Minutes, 1786-90 and 1827-8
Edited by THOMAS W DAVIS
The minutes of two committees of Protestant Dissenters (ministers and laymen) that sought repeal of the Test and Corporation Acts, which excluded from membership of town corporations and from civil or military office all those who were not prepared to take the sacrament according to the rites of the Church of England. Systematic and relatively complete, the minutes explain how two early pressure groups operated internally as organisations and how they campaigned externally to broaden the definition of religious toleration. The Acts were repealed by Parliament in 1828.
