The documents published in this volume are the assessment rolls for the City of London of 1541, for the second payment of the lay subsidy granted by parliament in 1540, and of 1582, for the second payment of a lay subsidy granted in 1581 These two documents give the names of 3,433 residents of London valued and assessed for the subsidy in 1541 and 5,900 in 1582, listed by ward and parish.  The rolls also give the names of a further 652 ‘strangers’ taxed in 1541 and 1,358 taxed in 1582. City companies were also included in these assessments. In 1541, but not in 1582, the estates of orphans of London citizens were taxed and these estates were valued and assessed in a separate roll which is also included  There is a very full index of persons, and a further index of places and institutions, mentioned in the rolls.
