Publications » Vol. 3: London Consistory Court Wills, 1492-1547
Edited by IDA DARLINGTON
The volume contains 245 London wills of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Nearly half are taken from the register Palmer (1492-1520), with the remainder being additional separate wills for the period from 1507 to 1547. Irrespective of their provenance, these wills are of interest for the light they throw on the ways of thought, environment and possessions of ordinary middle-class men and women of the early Tudor period. After 1536 the Catholic dedicatory phrases begin to show traces of new religious ideas. The first to be recognisably Lutheran is in the will of Henry Walton dated 1539.
