This meticulous record of one of the most significant ecclesiastical courts of the early modern period -- the Bishop of London's Court -- consists of depositions concerning a wide range of matters, including defamation, matrimonial disputes and other issues ecclesiastical (burial, conduct, excommunication). It is a particularly rich source of material because witnesses providing evidence often touched on a variety of subjects that bore tangentially on the case at hand. It was a period during which important changes occurred in canon law, in the Roman Catholic Church, the body of law based on the legislation of the councils and the popes, and in the monarchy.
