Publications » Vol. 43: The Apprenticeship of a Mountaineer: Edward Whymper’s London Diary 1855-1859
Edited by IAN SMITH
This edition provides, for the first time, a complete text of Whymper’s diary when he was working as a wood engraver and book illustrator in Lambeth, before his famous exploit in climbing the Matterhorn in 1865. When he began this diary Whymper was only fifteen years old and he describes the workings of a wood engraving studio alongside his response to events in Parliament and, further afield, in the Crimea and in India. As well as an index there is an Appendix providing biographical details about some 400 people mentioned in the diary.
