Publications » Vol. 6: The London Eyre of 1244
Edited by HELENA M. CHEW and MARTIN WEINBAUM
The roll printed here contains the fullest surviving record of the crown pleas for the City of London held before the itinerant judges at the Tower in 1244, together with the record of a special session in 1246 concerning purprestures, or encroachments on crown lands (usually streets in London). The rolls throw light on many aspects of the uneasy relations between the kings of England and the inhabitants of London in the early thirteenth century. The original Latin text is printed together with a full English translation. The Index aims to draw attention to the more interesting and important matters contained in the roll, together with all the names and places mentioned in the text.
